Esk is a town that looks so pleasant because of its green and leafy surroundings. It does in fact look gracious and stylish with a few historic buildings surrounding it. The Esk racecourse is 110 km North West of the Brisbane CBD, with Ipswich just 70 km from it.
The racecourse is managed by the Esk Jockey Club for approximately 100 years. Under the club's management the racecourse holds 2 non-TAB Saturdays and eight midweek TAB meetings plus a Picnic meeting held annually every April.
Esk race course has a 1600m circumference and a 250m home straight. With the track in a shape of a square that consists of a short straight with tight turns and a downhill run that starts at the 800 metres mark, it makes for an even track for all types of horses. All races here are run in a clockwise direction, the race course also has other facilities such as the Bookmakers area, TAB, bar and catering facilities. Because of this the racecourse can also accommodate non racing events.
The Esk picnic races are very famous and have been practiced since 1975. Picnic racing is very popular in Australia because of the relaxed environment that it brings. This way they can relax under a tree with picnics while watching. Members and the general public are even allowed to bring their own refreshments as long as they willing pay the entrance fee! The Esk picnic races allows colts and stallions two years and over to come and race.
