Also known as the Utakara Racecourse, the Geraldton Racecourse is considered as one of the more remarkable tracks that is currently in operation in Western Australia. The track is locarted 435 kilometers north of Perth on the coastline of Western Australia with amazing views of the Indian Ocean. The Chapman and the Greenough Rivers compliment the great ocean view from the track.
Although the track is not a major metropolitan venue like Ascot, the Geraldton Racecourse still plays a vital role when it comes to the racing industry in Western Australia. It is also a highly regarded trots venue.
The track is shaped like an oval and is a relatively small track, compared to others in Australia. Its circumference measures 1660m and is the home straight is 300m in length. Races held here are usually flat racing and the track's surface is grass.
Since its size is relatively small the track provides a homey and relaxed feeling. The track gives jockeys, trainers and the horses a choice whether they try and work their way up to the top level or continue racing in the same grade.
The Geraldton Racecourse is under the management of the Geraldton Turf Club. Usually the club holds about 16 race meetings from March to October annually including feature events - one of which is the Geraldton Cup. This race runs outside the period of the major carnival which is at the end of March. There is also a two day racing carnival held every second week of January. The club does an excellent job in keeping the track in good condition. They also claim that they have quite a full calendar for various events and functions.
