Beautifully situated within a couple of kilometers of the Campaspe River, with botanical gardens and historic houses and great bluestone architecture, the Kyneton Racecourse is one of the great attractions of the district.
The Kyneton Racecourse is a circle with a 1616m circumference and a 250m home straight. With the circular shape, turning circuits and well graded straights and turns, the track provides good galloping. With its considerably short straight, it normally gives an advantage to those horses who like to race very close to the lead. The course is fully irrigated and drained with loam. Considering most seasonal circumstances, the track retains its great racing conditions for the majority of the year.
Kyneton Racecourse is under the management of the Kynton District Racing Club which conducts 15 to 16 race meetings annually. Back in 2009, the Kyneton District Racing Club joined forces with the Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE to use the racecourse facilities as a training ground.
Every year, events held at this racecourse attract approximately 30,000 spectators and punters to the district. The normal field limits for the races held in Kyneton are 12 for the 1,450m events and 14 in the other events.
One of the major race events held at the Kyneton Racecourse is the Kyneton Cup that is run at 2000m and is always held the day after the Melbourne Cup in November. The Kyneton Cup is a fantastic celebration that features high quality thoroughbred racing events. Due to its great popularity it is actually declared as a public holiday in the local district. The Kyneton Cup Day is a part of the Victoria's Racing Carnival wherein it's very famous among local residents of Kyneton as well as surrounding districts.
