Aside from being in close proximity to the Sydney CBD (only 5-6 kilometers away), Randwick is a world-famous racetrack that is the setting to, arguably, the best Australian race carnival. This is also regarded as one of the most historical tracks in the country because races have been commenced here since 1833, when it was called 'Sandy Course'. For over 160 years, it continues to acquire recognition as the one of the grandest courses in Australia. In fact, it gained regal acknowledgment from Queen Elizabeth in 1992 when Her Majesty approved the administering club's request to affix 'Royal' to its name. Aside from this acclaim of royal proportions, this track also has the distinction of having been visited by two Popes.
Royal Randwick, with a circumference of 2213 meters and a straight of 410 meters, is considered the largest racetrack in New South Wales and is known to be the NSW Racing headquarters. It features multiple tracks for various purposes: one for the racing proper and another for training and trials. Aside from its throng of 20 trainers and more than 650 horses, this racetrack is also famous for its superbly cozy amenities including air conditioned rooms, bars and even a caf'. Truly, the Royal Randwick provides world-class track facilities and entertainment for its enthusiasts.
Perhaps one of the jolliest race carnivals in the country happens at this racecourse. Where the Royal Randwick is impressive, it becomes more so on Easter Sunday when its signature Australian Derby is held. Another widely-known event is the Epsom Handicap which highlights the grandeur of Randwick during the spring. Aside from these, many other top-notch races are run at this regal racecourse.
Randwick is currently managed by the Australian Turf Club, an offspring of the 2011 merger of the Sydney Turf Club and the Australian Jockey Club. The latter has been running the racecourse since 1842 until the much-publicised merger. In 2012, a $150 million upgrade has been set to introduce and improve the facilities and maintain its reputation as one of Australia's best.
