Located just an hour north, or around 89 kms, from Brisbane and just minutes away from the dazzling city of Caloundra lies the Sunshine Coast Racecourse. It is located strategically at one of Australia's most popular tourist destination. This race course is considered one of the finest thoroughbred racing facilities for training throughout the country.
The Sunshine Coast consist of three tracks; the grass track proper, the cushion track and the grass training track. The cushion track is 1760m and has a 400m home straight which is made of synthetic material costing approximately $6 million. Then there is the grass track proper which is 1967m and has a 400m home straight. It is considered as one of the best tracks in Australia merely because its track is long and has bends that are open angled. The barriers at 1300m and 1400m starts are given least importance. The tracks bend gives the back markers a great opportunity to win. The cushion track is an all weather racing ground. The main race course has a 1976m circumference and 400m straight.
The first race meet that was held at Sunshine Coast was in July 1985 and it was a success because of the number of spectators that attended it. The Sunshine Coast Turf Club conducts variety of races which includes the Caloundra Cup Carnival as one of the most popular attractions on this side of the state. Other horse race events include the Glasshouse Handicap with a $175,000 prize money and the Sunshine Coast Guineas with $100,000 prize that races over 1600m in distance. There is also the Ladies Oaks day which is very prestigious.
