Cox Plate

The W.S. Cox Plate

The W.S. Cox Plate is an Australian Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race held in Melbourne every October by the Moonee Valley Racing Club to honour W.S. Cox, the club's founder.  For three-year-olds and over, the race is considered to be the Weight for Age championship of Australasia. It is run over 2,040 metres on turf, and carries Australia's richest weight-for-age prize of  $3 million. The plate is named for William Samuel Cox, who established the Moonee Valley Racecourse in 1883.

The Cox Plate is rated by many to be the truest test of horses' abilities in Australia, and in 1999 it was included in the Emirates World Series Racing Championship, a global 'grand prix' of horse racing.

Moonee Valley Racecourse

Moonee Valley Racecourse is a horse-racing track in Melbourne, Australia which hosts races for Thoroughbreds.  Located six kilometres from the Melbourne CBD, it is the home of the Moonee Valley Racing Club.  It is situated in Moonee Ponds which is a suburb of the City of Moonee Valley.

The track is roughly rectangular, with a circumference of 1,805m and a finishing straight of 173 metres which is the shortest in Australia. The track is constructed of the StrathAyr Turf System, having a lower layer of sand and an upper rootzone layer reinforced with mesh elements. Racing takes place in an anti-clockwise direction, as it does on all Victorian tracks.

Cox Plate Day

Cox Plate Day is obviously the biggest event hosted by the Moonee Valley Race Club and they have a huge responsibility putting on one of the most anticipated meetings of the calendar. They know just how important the day is for both their image as well as the broader image of Australian racing and it's always a marvellous event.

It's not just the Cox Plate that attracts people either, in fact there are seven Group rated events on the card. In addition to the Group one there is the Group 2 Schweppes Stakes, Group 2 Moonee Valley Cup, Group 2 Crystal Mile, Group 2 AAMI Vase as well as the Group 3 Inglis Mile and Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes.

W.S. Cox Plate Fields and Form Guide

The Cox Plate field represents the best Weight-For-Age runners in Australia, and it is often filled with runners from the Yalumba Stakes and the Underwood Stakes.  The 2014 Cox Plate field will be announced on the 22nd of October, 2014.

W.S. Cox Plate Entry

The race's position towards the end of the Spring Carnival means punters have a plethora of trial and lead-up runs to consider the chances of success in the W.S. Cox Plate. There are a range of different events the final W.S. Cox Plate field may come via, including the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m), Yalumba Stakes (2000m) or Toorak Handicap (1600m) all held a fortnight before on Caulfield Guineas Day. Earlier races to watch as an indication for the Cox Plate include the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) in September, the Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) and the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m).

After the WS Cox Plate, but just prior to the Melbourne Cup, connections may then choose to run their horses in other weight-for-age events including the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m), although the main aim of many runners is the Melbourne Cup at Flemington just over a week later.

Bet on the W.S. Cox Plate

While the final odds for the W.S. Cox Plate are not released until a few days before the race, lucrative odds are offered many months in advance. Punters are given the option of betting on their selection, usually while receiving very large odds, before the final fields or even nominations are released. While a win could result in a very large payday, punters take the risk of having their horses scratched from the race or not even entered, resulting in a loss of all wagers laid.
